Why high resolution files don't always sound better...

Hostly? I cannot tell the difference... and I bet that in a blind test, most people also cannot. There is a paper out there where they show this, though it also states that with some training people can spot differences IIRC.

The article is about the fact that high res can sound even worse than CD!

Hi Manfred,

I was able to listen to the higher resolution in these files:

The 16/44,1 version was downsampled from the 24/96 original.


I was really surprised about the outcome.
I had listened to the recordings a reasonably amount of times before in 24/96 and it didn't take too long to identify the shortcomings of the 16/44,1 version.

And once I nailed the characteristics of those shortcomings it was hard to miss them.
I can still enjoy 16/44,1 but I am convinced of it's lower fidelity.
