Sade - Promise

Promise, the follow-up album of their multi-million selling debut album Diamond Life (MOVLP602), was released in 1985 and includes typical Sade songs and hit singles like "The Sweetest Taboo", "Never As Good As The First Time", "Is It A Crime" and "Jezebel".
Promise became the band's first album to top the album charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Over the years, it was certified double platinum in the UK and quadruple platinum in the US, with Sade herself returning again as the queen of cool.

Recorded at the famous L.A. club Whisky A Go Go in 1966, this album captures the raw energy of a small Otis Redding gig. Playing with his own touring band, this is Otis in his tried & true form – with a kick-ass band that blew the chitlin circuit's roofs off.

Gary Moore Band - Grinding Stone

On his debut album Grinding Stone (1973) Moore explores a number of styles, from the title track's instrumental Boogie Rock to soulful vocals in "Sail Across the Mountain" and 17 minutes of guitar and keyboard excursions in the surprisingly funky "Spirit".
Often cited as an overlooked gem and totally ahead of its time, Grinding Stone showcases Moore at his most experimental, a taste of the triumphs that followed with his work in Colosseum II & Thin Lizzy.

John Coltrane - Ole Coltrane

Olé's title track is striking in resemblance to the Spanish influence heard on Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain (MOVLP029), although Olé takes this vibe a bit further.
His combo stretches out with inspired improvisations from Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner and of course Coltrane himself. Another fine classic Jazz release by Music On Vinyl indeed.

House Of Pain - House Of Pain (AKA Fine Malt Lyrics)

House of Pain's self-titled debut album (1992) went multi-platinum, spawning the successful DJ Muggs' (Cypress Hill) produced single "Jump Around".
Fashioning themselves as rowdy Irish-American hooligans, they toured with various rap and alternative-rock bands after their breakthrough. You can also find them on the influential 1993 rock-rap collaborative Judgment Night movie soundtrack [MOVLP232] on which they perform a track together with Helmet.

Anita Baker - Rapture

Rapture is the second album by the American vocalist Anita Baker. It was released in 1986, becoming her breakout album, selling over 8 million copies worldwide (of which 5 million in the US) and earning her two Grammy Awards.
The album produced one moving hit after another, including "Sweet Love", "Caught up in the Rapture", "Same Ole Love" and "No One in This World". A re-release has been long overdue... Enjoy!

Tracy Bonham - The Burdens Of Being Upright

Classically trained violinist Tracy Bonham emerged from Boston with her first major-label release, The Burdens of Being Upright. The album yielded a significant radio hit with "Mother Mother," which leads the album, raising the bar for the rest of the record.
The album went gold within six months and later that year she was nominated for the Best Alternative Music Performance at the Grammy Awards and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance (for "Mother Mother").

Surrealistic lyrics, heavy chords and unexpected twists make Starsailor a brilliant album that admittedly, isn't for everybody, but endures as one of the most legendary albums ever made by a singer/songwriter.

Purple is the second studio album released by the Stone Temple Pilots. The album, building on the foundations laid by the band's debut album Core was a huge success for the band, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over six million copies worldwide.
The album's style sees an expansion of the band's sound. They shifted to a more alternative rock-style, incorporating psychedelic and southern rock influences. It produced a number of successful singles a.o. "Vasoline", "Interstate Love Song" and "Big Empty".

RANDY NEWMAN - LITTLE CRIMINALS

Like most of Newman's work, the album Little Criminals avoids traditional pop-music themes (there is not one love song on this album) in favour of musical story-telling. Some of the instrumental work and backing vocals on the album are performed by The Eagles.
The song "Baltimore" was covered by a.o. Nina Simone, Nils Lofgren and David Gray. The first song on the album "Short People" became a hit single in its own right. Little Criminals peaked at #9 on the US Billboard 200 chart, Newman's highest-charting album to date.

Kris Kristofferson had a belated start of a great recording career when he was in his mid thirties, releasing Kristofferson in 1970. The Nashville star distinguished himself from other Country acts, taking on a political stance lyrically that exceeded Nashville standards.
Songs on Kristofferson were picked up by fellow artists Johnny Cash ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down") and Janis Joplin ("Me And Bobby McGee") recognizing his stature as a songwriter instantly. This album hasn't seen a vinyl reissue for three decades!

Perfectly combining Heavy Metal and Prog Rock, Uriah Heep proved on their second album Salisbury (1972) that they were the undisputed flag bearers of the British Prog Rock movement.

This is Muddy in his younger years, recorded on several dates spanning 1948-1952 at what were probably his first amplified sessions. Great tracks include the scorching "She's Alright", "Kind Hearted Woman" and "Honey Bee".
More Real Folk Blues (originally released in 1967 on the famed Chess Records) is an essential early Muddy Waters compilation for Chicago Blues fans.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY - WISEBLOOD

The history of Corrosion of Conformity in modern heavy music is highly significant, not least due to Pepper Keenan's formation of Down along with Pantera's Philip Anselmo, leaders of the New Orleans NOLA scene. Decibel Magazine refer to COC as 'a crucial stylistic lynchpin in the bridge between metal and punk' that 'irrevocably re-shaped crossover's sonic possibilities'.  
One of the best known Corrosion of Conformity albums, Wiseblood was their 5th full length release. Metallica's James Hetfield makes a guest appearance on this album, providing backup vocals on "Man Or Ash".  First 750 copies are pressed on red/black vinyl!

JOHN HIATT - BRING THE FAMILY

Bring The Family (1987) was recorded in just four days by Hiatt's dream line up: Ry Cooder on guitar, Nick Lowe on bass and Jim Keltner on drums. The excitement of working together with his favourite musicians in the game surfaces in a sizzling spontaneity in the grooves these guys lay down.
The album spawned the single "Thank You Girl" that fared well on the Mainstream Rock charts. Further highlights on the album are "Memphis In The Meantime", "Thing Called Love" and "Have A Little Faith In Me" (the one and only Hiatt original, also later interpreted by stars like Joe Cocker and Bon Jovi).

When you count out the original Blues men from the United States, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band is arguably the finest example of raw Blues essence. With white harmonica player Butterfield at the center, the racially integrated group started as one of the first authentic and genuine British Blues combos.
Their first and eponymous album from 1965 contains a mix of electric Chicago style Blues and Rock & Roll: raw, brazen and powerful, beautifully weaved together by Butterfields harmonica and scorching vocals.

METAL CHURCH - HUMAN FACTOR

Metal Church's 4th album is often cited as their best. Breaking through in the-mid eighties within a blossoming Thrash Metal scene, these guys from Seattle stuck to their guns while other bands were polishing their sound to meet popular demand.
The Human Factor (1991) excels in chugging riffs, melodic breaks, pulsing beats and furious vocals – a true Thrash classic. The lyrics stand out in their substance: singer Mike Howe tackles political and social subjects on "Date with Poverty", "Flee From Reality" and "The Final Word".

HUGHES AND THRALL - HUGHES AND THRALL

Ex-Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes teamed up with axeslinger Pat Thrall in the early '80s, and their combined magic resulted in their one-off same titled album in 1982. Often called an 'overlooked gem' Hughes/Thrall was recorded in Los Angeles and coproduced by Andy Johns, famed for his production work for the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Rod Stewart.

JAMES TAYLOR - JT

Recorded in 1977, James Taylor's first album for Columbia Records made a huge impact on the hit charts. The album itself peaked at number 4 of the Billboard 200, and the singles "Handy Man" and "Your Smiling Face" hit high on the charts as well. Taylor mixed his patented acoustic guitar-based Folk sound with elements of Rock, Blues and Country to great effect.

Having assembled a new line-up, Byrds front man Roger McQuinn hit the bull's eye with Ballad Of Easy Rider in 1969. The album profited from its association with the highly successful movie Easy Rider.

ELVIS PRESLEY - ELVIS AT STAX

In the mid-seventies, Elvis decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf – Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX – the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes.
The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work. With the Elvis At Stax release, all of this material is collected for the first time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn't have the known hits, tells a great story.

BREAD - BREAD

Founded by David Gates and James Griffin, Bread was one of the most popular Pop groups of the early '70s. The band proved on their eponymous debut album (1969) that they were excellent songwriters and craftsmen of their instruments.
Although the album did not contain a hit single at the time of release ("It Don't Matter To Me" later became a hit but only after their second album release On The Waters) it set the course for the group's fame and fortune.

MINK DEVILLE - COUP DE GRACE

Coup De Grace (1981) was the zenith of Mink DeVille's career. Working together with famed producer Jack Nitzsche proved to be a wise step: his influence on its sound made the album a timeless classic.
Willy DeVille's unique balladeering style is perfectly framed in a timeless Rock & Roll fashion, not unlike Springsteen but with a soulful twist. Combining Punk, Rock, New Wave, '50s R&B and Doo-Wop, Mink DeVille's unique sound has beautifully blossomed on Coup De Grace and will likely live on as their best album.

LOWELL GEORGE - THANKS I'LL EAT IT HERE

Thanks I'll Eat It Here (1979) picked up where George left off his musical influence five years earlier on Little Feat's Dixie Chicken.
The album contains a variety of cover versions (by artists such as Allen Toussaint and Memphis Soul legend Ann Peebles) interspersed with his own original compositions. If only there were more of the latter, as sadly George did not live to see the '80s.

FAITH NO MORE - ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Having a new guitarist in their ranks, Faith No More recorded 12 fresh songs in the comfort of bassist Billy Gould's home studio. These sessions produced two hits: "Ashes To Ashes" and "Last Cup Of Sorrow".
At its release in 1997 Album Of The Year was pressed on LP in small quantities, making original vinyl copies very hard to find. To stir up some attention we've thrown in a special first run of 2000 copies on GOLD vinyl – must be seen to be believed. Don't sleep on this one.

When James Mercer of the Shins got together with Brian Burton AKA Danger Mouse, the result became more than the sum of its parts.
Plans for their collaboration were made since 2004 but first blossomed into their first single "The High Road" in 2009. An album had to follow, so in 2010 Broken Bells was released to great critical and popular acclaim.

Often called 'one of the defining Glam platters', Mott The Hoople's All The Young Dudes (1972) was an influential record when it came out, and continues to impress listeners to this day.
Coproduced by David Bowie, the album contains a balanced selection of well written songs by Ian Hunter and the boys. The band is on a roll, and having Bowie on board to colour in the songs with his distinctive style makes this an essential record for '70s Rock fans all over the globe.

Bonnie Raitt's second album Give It Up (1972) is considered one of her very best. Although she scored hits with later albums, Give It Up developed into a genre-bending and generation-defining record.

OTIS REDDING - SINGS SOUL BALLADS

Released in 1965, Otis Redding's second album Sings Soul Ballads features a fine choice of sweet and tender songs. Backed up by the STAX house band, Redding delivers the goods with impressive style.
Biggest hit on the album proved to be "Mr. Pitiful", a nickname given to Redding by a local Memphis radio DJ.

Produced by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange (famous for recording AC/DCs' Back In Black), 4 meant the definitive mainstream breakthrough for New York based AOR band Foreigner.
Featuring the massive hit "Waiting For A Girl Like You", the album turned into a heavy seller. Combining heavy riffing with effective power balladry, Foreigner claimed their stake in Rock and will live on as a Rock staple for many decades to come.

RANDY NEWMAN - SAIL AWAY

Often cited as one of his finest works, Sail Away (1972) established Randy Newman as a unique Pop artist like no other. Equally influenced by the vocal delivery of Bob Dylan and by traditional New Orleans R&B, Newman added a healthy dose of humour to the mix to great effect.
Best known track from Sail Away is "You Can Leave Your Hat On", made famous by Joe Cocker a few years later.

Riding on the success of "More Than Words", Extreme II: Pornograffitti became the breakthrough-album for the Bostonian rockers Extreme.

Sandie Shaw would be forever famous for winning the Euro Vision Song Contest in 1967 with "Puppet On A String".
She ventured into a more seriously groovy direction on Reviewing The Situation (1969), covering songs by contemporary chartbusting artists like The Beatles, Rufus Thomas, Lovin' Spoonful, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan.

BOB JAMES - ONE

For his first solo album Bob James enlisted a string of experienced Jazz players including Steve Gadd and Idris Muhammad on drums, Grover Washington on sax and Gary King on bass.  
This resulted in a lush, experimental Jazz Funk record, produced by Creed Taylor and recorded at the famous Van Gelder Studios. Classic stuff, including the B-Boy anthem "Nautilus".

DONOVAN - BARABAJAGAL

British Folk singer Donovan found his creative peak on Barabajagal (1969), allowing him to open up the American Pop market to his unique brand of music.
The album contains standout tracks like "Atlantis", "Superlungs My Supergirl" and the title track, the latter two being performed with The Jeff Beck Group as backing band. Furthermore, Donovan collaborated with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and guitarist Big Jim Sullivan on several songs.

ROGER MCGUINN - ROGER MCGUINN

After leaving The Byrds, front man Roger McGuinn released a self-titled solo album to great critical acclaim in 1973. Going back to basics, McGuinn does what he does best: his unique recipe of energetic Folk Rock combined with his strong voice delivers a compelling album.
His newfound artistic freedom didn't stop him from inviting friends like Bob Dylan on "I'm So Restless", frequent Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy as co-songwriter and his old The Byrds band mates on "My New Woman" to appear on his album. Even Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys joins in on "Draggin'" and David Crosby can also be heard on this album.

RANDY NEWMAN - FAUST

Randy Newman's Faust is a 1993 musical based the work on the classic story of Faust. Newman borrowed elements from the version by Goethe, as well as Milton's Paradise Lost, but updated the story to the modern day and infused it with humorous cynicism.
Vocal duties are co handled by James Taylor, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley. Available on vinyl for the first time!

MILES DAVIS - DOO-BOP

Miles Davis was on the forefront of many new subgenres of music; he even invented the mix of Jazz and Hip Hop with Doo-Bop (1992), a collaboration with producer Easy Mo Bee. Bee was involved in production work for Big Daddy Kane and Notorious B.I.G., which earned him grand stature in Hip Hop circles.
A worthy goodbye to the master of the Jazz trumpet.

Bonnie Raitt's The Glow (1979) captured her in an important period of her career, taking on popular cover material such as "I Thank You" by Sam & Dave, "Your Good Thing (Is About To End)" by Lou Rawls and Jackson Browne's "You're Gonna Get What's Coming".
The Glow is a wonderful Raitt exercise, belonging in the ranks of best Raitt albums.

VANGELIS - ANTARCTICA

Antarctica is the Vangelis soundtrack to the film Nankyoku Monogatari by Koreyoshi Kurahara, released in 1983. The story is about two Japanese scientists, Ushioda and Ochi, who develop a bond with their sled dogs while on an expedition in Antarctica.
The soundtrack successfully captures the chilly and lonely experience of the cold continent, with the layered synthesized music Vangelis is known and revered for.

Earthling is the 20th studio album by David Bowie, released in February 1997. The album showcases an electronica-influenced sound partly inspired by the industrial and drum and bass culture of the 1990s like Prodigy and Underworld.

Released in 1966, The Swinger From Rio is perhaps the best example of a genre defining record, capturing pianist Sergio Mendes playing straight up Bossa Nova with a stellar line-up of seasoned musicians.
The album reserves a special guest spot for the famed Antônio Carlos Jobim on violin, whose writing credits include the Jazz standard "The Girl From Ipanema". Jobim is further credited with being on the forefront of the Bossa Nova style, a Brazilian combination of Samba and Jazz.

Major Lance was one of the leading figures of Chicago Soul during the '60s and the top-selling artist for OKeh Records during the decade. His mid-sixties output consists of some of the most popular good-time R&B of its era.

On the aptly titled Doin' Our Thing (1968), the famed Stax house band indeed play their own compositions, to be heard in the album opener "I Can Dig It", the title track and "Blue On Green". But the boys also make a list of classic Soul and R&B covers their own.
They tackle famous tracks like "Expressway To Your Heart", written by the famed producer duo Gamble & Huff and popularized by the Soul Survivors in 1967. "The Beat Goes On", originally written by Sonny Bono (who made it an evergreen with his then-wife Cher) is sprinkled with some Booker T. magic and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by Holland, Dozier & Holland gets the ever-so-funky organ treatment.

After graduating from the Berklee School of Music, Keith Jarrett formed his own trio in Boston, played briefly with Roland Kirk and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
Charlie Haden, the bassist in this recording, is a musician who earned prominence as a member of the original Ornette Coleman Trio which exploded on the jazz scene in the middle fifties. Drummer Paul Motian, best known for his long association with the Bill Evans Trio, is one of the most sensitive drummers in jazz.
