Manfred visits td124 !!!...

Olà,

normalmente daqui a bocado o nosso amigo Manfred (o nosso alemão nacional), vém me ver afim de passar um dia a discutir hifi e escutar o sistema... vou tentar tirar algumas fotografias, para que todos o possam conheçer!...

È sempre uma mistura de entusiasmo e de apreensão, de descobrir fisicamente alguém com quém jà trocàmos pontos de vista, ideias e sensações. Então era naturalmente nesse estado, que eu estava à chegada do nosso amigo Manfred. Mas, imediatamente desde o nosso caloroso aperto de mãos, era evidente o prazer comum de estarmos face a face, enfim…  pois o nosso amigo é jovial, sorridente e descontraido. Um T-Shirt à gloria do 33/45 rpm, não deixava duvidas quanto às preferências de formato, como é de esperar da parte de um membro do AAP e do forum analogico alemão !!!

Mas, um horizonte ameçeador esperava pelo nosso amigo Manfred. Tivémos um dia quente e cheio de sol, como o mediterraneo posséde no verão. As cigarras cantavam como para dizer ao nosso alemão, que as sonoridades e ritmos de vida do sul, não são as mesmas que as do norte… então desde a chegada sentàmo-nos no jardim com um copo, de àgua para ele (sabedoria alemã) e de « rosé » para mim (tradição latina), afim de começar a responder às inumeras questões que o assaltavam. Eu sabia que o meu sistema iria ser surpreendente, e algo incompreensivel, então aproveitei deste intervalo, para lhe explicar os meus pontos de vista, que são antinomicos em relação à « mainstream » ao qual estamos habituados…



Subimos então ao auditorio, afim que ele faça conhecimento com o sistema que desejava tanto escutar e cuja estructura o perturbava. Geralmente quando se véem colunas voluminosas e prestigiosas, o sistema é composto de potentes unidades monofonicas, prévio, Dac’s e fontes separadas e phonos independentes… ora que no meu caso, é um integrado com dois botões e 10 watts (que inclui o Dac e o Phono), um « média center » para arquivar os ficheiros e o gira… o que se chama um « sistema minimalista » !!!... e isto surpreende e interroga muitas pessoas. A primeira surpresa foi o gira que jà rodava para aqueçer (màquinas do passado…), para o qual ele não reconheceu ném os braços (complétamente modificados), ném a célula mas acabou por reconhecer a M75, e mesmo o prato ele pensava que não era o original mas um modelo sob medida, o que não é o caso. A onctuosidade, silêncio e regularidade de rotação surpreendeu muito o nosso amigo…



O amplificador surpreendeu-o tanto ou mais, pois é um aparelho hibrido de dimensões e potência muito modestas, mas integralmente pilotado e controlado por micro processador, que seja o volume, o bias das vàlvula e os transistores… o que dà a sensação de ver um computador com vàlvulas na saida !…, isto junto dà a impressão de estar face a um sistema partilhado entre o vintage e o ultramoderno (tanto pelo gira que pelo amplificador), o que pode perturbar a logica audiofila habitual…        então là passàmos à escuta, com muitos estilos diferentes, ponctuadas por uma conversa animada e apaixonada, sobre a técnica a sensibilidade e o mundo do audio/alta fidelidade…

Manfred visits TD124 - Part One: "tradition and modernity"

Many months ago we discovered that Paulo TD 124 lives in Montpellier - the region where we often spend our holidays. So Paulo did not hesitate to invite me for visiting him at the next opportunity.

Montpellier is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region and lies near by the mediterranean sea. While this region is a preferred holiday area for many (South-)Germans, no other tourist told me ever to visit Montpellier! My family and I did anyway - and were very pleasantly surprised. What we found is a enjoyable and lively town centre with dozens of small, inviting restaurants and cafés.



There are shopping malls, of course, but in the streets there are still many individual small shops to discover, instead of the usual, boring chain stores, which dominate most cities nowadays.

The cityscape of Montpellier is a nice blend of gorgeous maisons bourgeoises from the 17th, 18th and 19th century and modern architecture, while small streets, picturesque places and historical buildings indicate the medieval origin of the city.



Coincidence or not - a similarly harmonic coexistence of tradition and modernity I should also find in the system of Paulo!

In the forefront of my visit I did know some details about the system, esepecially that TD124 prefers idler wheel turntables from Lenco, Shure MM cartridges and uses a amplifier designed by himself which contains tubes. But about the rest I could only speculate...

After the heartily welcome by maestro Paulo and his family we sat in the garden and talked about this and that. Writing with someone in the internet ant sitting face to face are clearly very different things, but on the other hand it's amazing, how much "personality" you can extract from writing, if he is serious.

However, Paulo prepared me carefully for the things to hear and told me that he differentiates between "audio", which is shortly creating a sound with your system that pleases the taste of the owner. This is not a bad thing per se, but such a system puts it's own fingerprint on the music and the recording. On the contrary the goal of "hifi" is to play the recording, as it is on the media. This is the way, Paulo prefers.

Many people associate tubes with warm sound and transistors with a more neutral or cool reproduction. So he told me, that the amplifier he designed, is quite different: "This amplifier will not come to you - you have to come to the amplifier" he said. "I don't like amplifiers which seduce me", he explained. The main goal was to preserve as much as possible of the original recording.

As simple these statements sound, I admit that I never heard this so clearly expressed. So, finally, Paulo released my tension of the things to come and we went to the listening room. My next surprise were the loudspeakers. For whatever reason I expected a exotical design: horns, fullrange, name it, but not the tall 3-way 5 chassis floorstanders. Impressive, but, eh, unexpected conventional. And to drive 5 chassis with 10 tube watts seeemed a bit ambitous to me. Paulo instantly realized my sceptic view and smiled. Normally, this speakers would need an amp with 100 watts or more, he told me, but with this very special amplifier, 10 watts proved to be sufficient.



Finally I sat in the listening chair and listened to the first notes of "Waltz for Debby"....

That's true, i don't like amplifiers, music, people or even women that tries to seduce me!... i like true things in a true place, not virtuallity!... and audio/hifi is not an exception to this old and deep point of vue...

You're already sitten, so i'm waiting for your thoughts...      ...i'm very curious!!!...

But, i'm glad you've returned safe and i hope we'll see us again soon!!!... I've spent a super day with you, and i hope it will not be the last...

No no, the  change of mind is long ago and was still chez moi!

Paulo had a different pressing which is also very enjoyable.
But be ensured there is no problem with Paulos system. It even manages to extract beautiful music from these obsolete "vinyl recordings" of the last millennium. Imagine!

Now I sat there, full of expectations and tensions and a wonderful LP spinning.

At first I realized the sound was - yeah, different. Paulo uses to listen at a lower level than I normally do and so it needed a little time to get adjusted. And I needed a few more recordings to get the whole picture. Here some observations:

• With Ella Fitzgerald I heard the holographic projection of the voice that fascinated Cesar so at his visit.
  
• A Purcell recording showed a violin section sounding so natural as I cannot remember from any other system. It is difficult to describe: brilliant, but without edge - not warm and not cold - easy and airy but at the same time palpable multiple instruments - just natural and a grat pleasure for the ear. The same was true with the vocals on this recording.
  
• The system showed very clearly the different recording perspectives. On the Bill Evans recording more left - right, with Ella Fitzgerald the mentioned holographic voice in the centre. And a very realistic perspective with Purcell.
  
• striking resolution with the Bill Evans recording playing at moderate level: the background noise of the audience was just there, almost as if the people were in the same room behind the speakers. It was clearly audible and disdiguished, but never did not pop out or disturb, just natural.
  
• especially with voices I soon realized, that this system shows a extraordinary vibrancy and intensity at quite moderate levels. With my own system I need a higher sound level to get a similar impression.
  

Paulo explained that he pays much attention to get the dynamics and especially the microdynamics right. The main influence have the source components which must deliver these qualities. Real dynamics are essential for good sound and can only be preserved my the rest of the system - but never can be restored if once lost.

And the system sounded completely neutral to me. It adds nothing and hides nothing. It was not warm or cold sounding but let's only the music flow. Normally I avoid the term neutrality because almost any system I heard hat it's specific sound, but here it fits perfectly.

At this stage I realized again that the base of the source component consisted of a moderate 70's Lenco, a vintage Thorens arm and a mass production 60's Shure MM! But maestro TD124 managed to combine and modify these elements so skilled and intelligent, that I would dare to say that this turntable played not only without flaws but sounded at the same level as the best turntables I heard before, regardless of cost.




But it should get even better...

Yes, sadly we had no time for many interesting things! We did not talk about plinths, the mystic "true hybrid" technology, digital....
I hope we can have a sequel one day.

Mas, comigo hà sempre um "mas" como voçês jà sabem, então o gira que o Manfred escutou jà està algo afastado de um Lenco de base, como o braço e a célula, o que explica a sua surpresa. Vamos là ver então (em grandes linhas) as mudanças que fiz:

* Uma base da qual jà falei e que està na versão MKII, e é a que o Manfred escutou. Mais rigida, o que favoreçe a microdinamica, mas mais absorvente o que favorisa o palco...

* O braço da roda, é actualmente feito de um tubo de fibra de carbono, que rigidifica e amorteçe as vibrações, conduzindo a menos rumble e a uma melhor estabilidade da velocidade.

* A mola da roda, foi substituida por um longo fio de tração, que se apoia numa pulia de borracha e elimina as vibrações conduzidas ao prato. Menos rumble e mais trânsparência.

* A suspensão do motor foi optimisada, e este foi desmontado, equilibrado e recableado.

*O gira repousa em silent-blocs rigidos, com um sistema de tração elastica que tira o gira contra a base, o que assegura um amortecimento continuo das resonâncias e aumenta a transparência.

* O braço Thorens foi integralmente desmontado e adaptado à M75!... agora tém um tubo em fibra de carbono especial, leve muito rigida e auto amortecida. Assim o peso é ainda inferior ao de origem, é mais rigido e reactivo ao movimento vertical

* O braço foi recableado com cabo prata/cobre isolado téflon e amortecido no interior... o contrapeso foi cortado, para se adaptar à leveza do braço e a base foi redesenhada para ser mais rigida.

* A célula é fixa num ponto central, o que diminui o peso e elimina a concha. Assim e rigidez do braço é total, o que é uma avantagem em termos de precisão, dinamica e banda sonora...

* A célula é desmontada, polida (corpo) e o gerador é amortecido por silicone e reposto no corpo...



Visto assim, até nem pareçe ser muita coisa, mas...   é o suficiente, para que este modesto conjunto se tenha tornado o meu "gira oficial", e a melhor leitura vinilo que jà tive e isto em todos os critérios. Para mim jà é muito, e muito mais do que esperava!...

Sometimes, the truth is the most beautiful of dreams... so i prefer the simple beauty of music, rather then an estheticaly point of view made by the choice of some techniques... as i've told you!!!...

But, is rare that someone, want's to listen only music!... without sugar, pepper, salt & all the other spices... ... and i think that, this point of vue turns in your mind, and now you're prepared for the jump!...

I forgot to mention that the Lenco was very quiet. I could neither hear any motor noise standing next to the turntable nor any rumble or other noise through the speakers.

Paulo showed me a seperate modified  unmounted TP11 armtube, too. It is very rigid, ultralight and looks perfectly elegant.

Yes, Paulo, you're right!
The nice thing is: home again I found my system plays the music already quite well! Not completely neutral as yours and lacking a bit microdynamics in comparison - but it communicates the music quite good. So, there is no need for any changes at the moment, and future revisions have to be chosen very carefully!

But I had first to visit you, to get these things so clear.

Aqui pode-se ver o tubo em carbono da roda assim que o fio /roldana/ mola que placa a roda contra o prato e a pulia do motor. A roda foi rectificada e as anilhas no eixo da roda, que eram em baquelite são agora em téflon...

Não, utiliso um estroboscopio com iluminação a led que chega para ver a precisão e estabilidade da rotação, e às vezes um disco de frequências com o osciloscopio, o que é muito preciso quando tenho duvidas. O rumble, faço à antiga com o estétoscopio... e jà chega e sobra ...

Ah!... e utiliso também as orelhas de vez em quando, para "medir" como a coisa "toca" !!!...

Then Paulo hat a little surprise for me - he carefully changed the needle from a stock Ed Saunders with only few hours to a modfied Jico SAS. Although I was yet very impressed by Paulos analogue setup, the difference was immediately audible even for the deaf.


The only point in the first part of the audition which could be critcized - the somewhat elevated groove noise - was gone! The Jico SAS was as silent as an expensive MC.
But even the sound got clearly better, clearer, as if a kind of haze (which I didn't notice before!) was removed. Hardcore audiophiles would probably find the improvement of this 100 € - upgrade thousands of Euros worth.

Perhaps I should mention that the performance of the M75 chez Paulo had nothing in common with my own experiments! At Paulos system the M75 plays with the superb resolution of expensive MCs, zero distortion, crystal clear esses and shows no limits in the frequency extremes. The rock stable, holographic imaging was yet mentioned by Cesar. And, of course, it had the musical flow and impact Paulo loves so with MM. (sidenote: MC users can have these qualites too, with a Brutus... ahem)     The VTF was 1,2 g (1,5g with the Ed Saunders needle) - try that with a MC!

Paulo confirmed, that the matching of tonearm and cartridge is essential for the performance of a analogue setup. The Shure needs a very light and rigid tonearm (the effective mass should be considerably under 10 g), unfortunately most modern tonearms are too heavy. And the tonearm bearings have to be virtually friction free and should have no play. Believe me, if you go so low with the tonearm mass and VTF, any small an unnoticed weakness of the bearings will become very obvious and will kill the sound.

This is one of the points, why the performance of the "small" M75 cartridge is generally underrated. It is mostly used with a cheap needle, a mediocre tonarm and an imprecise setup of geometry, VTF and ASF. In this context it plays as anyone expects - quite o.k. for the price, but nothing to get excited.

Now I fully understand why Paulo loves so the M75 - but (there is always a but)    to get at this level of performance it needs very high skills! For example I do not know any current available stock tonearm which is up to the task - with the possible exception of some unipivot designs (Morch? They have very light armtubes afaik). Perhaps Paulo has any tipps here?

Paulos turntable concept convinced me and now I dream of my own elaborate Lenco...

Now it is clear to all of us that Paulo's system has put a spell on you.
As I read more and more of your report, its easy to realize that Paulo has put together something pretty special. But as you wisely said, it needs lots of skills and even more of real deep knowledge. It's not for the common man.
And it also proves that the Lenco is a damn good turntable as a stock item, and with lots of potential for improvements.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Not easy to put all the feelings you encountered into words, especially in a Language that is universal but not our mother language.  And the pics are fantastic too.

thank you for the kind words. It was a really great experience for me to meet Paulo and it is now a pleasure and need for me to share it a little bit with the great AAP Forum!

It may sound a little too flattering, but here in the AAP I often find a far more holistic, profound and relaxed approach to music and audio than elsewhere which pleases me very much. Ties of friendship have a high value here and you all can really be proud on that culture!
